Full-time Physician-Hospitalist

at Dept of Veterans Affairs in Iowa City, IA

The Iowa City Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care System is seeking three (3) experienced and dynamic internal medicine physicians to serve as full time Hospitalists.Services to be performed include but are not limited to:
Admiting and managing inpatients at the Iowa City VA Medical Center facility in Iowa City, Iowa. This includes admitting patients and performing histories and physical examinations; rounding on patients and writing progress notes; discharge planning and timely completion of discharge summaries.
Works closely with specialists and primary care physicians to ensure that inpatients receive continuous high quality care.
Provides inpatient medicine consultations to other services, including but not limited to, Mental Health and Surgery.
Participates in quality assurance programs and chart reviews.
Communicates with incoming and off going Hospitalists to ensure continuity of care.
Responds to code blue & Rapid Response Team calls throughout the facility while on duty, and is a lead disaster team coordinator for triage during disaster or mass casualty situations.
Completes all medical records (including discharge summaries) in accordance with Bylaws, Rules and Regulations of the Medical Staff.
In the performance of official duties, the Hospitalists have regular access to printed and electronic files containing sensitive date which must be protected under the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHS policy. The Physicians will be responsible for (1) protecting that data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion and (2) following applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc. as set out in a computer access agreement which the employee signs.
Basic Requirements:
Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: Board Certified/Board Eligible in Internal Medicine.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity; keen hearing (aid permitted); clear, distinctive speech; and manual dexterity. This position requires walking (up to 3 hours), standing (up to 3 hours), stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing.
