Full-time Operating Room Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY
The Operating Room Assistant (ORA) is responsible for providing support service to the Operating Room team. The ORA functions under the supervision of the Registered Nurse.
PERSONAL SPECIFICATIONS
A. Education
Requires high school diploma or GED and/or appropriate certification as required by hospital policy or government regulation.
B. Qualifications/Experience
Prefer minimum of 1 year clinical experience.
C. Special Skills/Knowledge
· Maintain current BCLS certification.
· Must have successfully completed in-hospital orientation and unit competencies.
D. Mental and Cognitive Traits Required
· Respects patient’s confidentiality in all communication, and fully complies with hospital wide ethics process.
· Introduces self to patients, families and colleagues.
· Maintains friendly, courteous and responsible interpersonal communication patterns.
· Verbally presents factual, concise, and timely information continually throughout the shift to RN and/or patient care team.
· Exercises sound judgement, seeking advice when appropriate.
· Directs concerns regarding patient care to RN/O.R. manager, or responsible staff nurses.
· Objectively directs concerns regarding unit processes and/or hospital policies to unit manager, lead nurse, or staff development coordinator.
· Easily grasps new concepts and acquires new skills/procedures readily.

F. Physical Demands
· Sit, walk, stand: may spend up to 80 percent of working time standing/walking.
· Lift, carry, push, pull: must be able to lift, carry, push, pull objects weighing at least 25 pounds, utilizing good body mechanics.
· Bend, stoop, kneel, reach: required for operating equipment/assisting patients.
· Manual dexterity: good manual and finger dexterity is needed.
· Speaking and hearing: essential to the communication needs of this position.
· Visual acuity and depth perception: required to perform procedures, operate equipment, assist patients.
G. Environmental Conditions
· May be subjected to noise and disagreeable odors.
· Moving mechanical parts are found in the work environment.
· Standard Precautions and Isolation Precautions must be followed when working in any clinical area; workers are exposed to biologic and chemical hazards and must use appropriate personal protective equipment as trained.
· Work is performed in a well-lighted, temperature-controlled, and humidity-controlled environment.
H. OSHA Risk Factor (Check one)
Category I - Normal job related task involve an inherent potential for membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues. Use of protective measures should be used under normal conditions.
Category II - Normal work routine does not involve exposure, but exposure may be required as a condition of employment. Protective measures should be readily available.
Category III - No exposure to blood, bodily fluids or tissues is expected in the work routine.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Is aware of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of department or hospital administrative staff.
· Purposefully conducts all aspects of the job in an ethical manner in support of the hospital’s commitment to ethical behavior in all areas of personal and professional activity.
· Performs assigned patient care duties as needed and/or delegated to, which may include:
- Monitors surgical schedule to ensure that the patient arrives on the unit in a timely manner.
- Assists patients with elimination, ambulation, mobilization (i.e., bed to chair, bed to bedside commode, bed to bathroom, bed to stretcher, etc.) as needed.
- Transports patients via wheelchair, stretcher or bed.
- Performs linen changes on stretchers and beds.
- Transfer patient from stretcher or bed to OR bed.
- Completes preop skin clip/shave according to established guidelines and physician preference.
- Responds to patient needs promptly.
- Provides assistance to other team members as required.
- Transport non narcotic medication within the operating room department.
· Demonstrates an awareness of patient and personal safety.
- Follows department dress code policy and wears appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Knowledgeable about Standard and Isolation Precautions.
- Implements measures to promote a safe environment for the patient/family.
- Observes and promptly reports any unusual occurrences.
- Practices correct body mechanics in performing patient care activities.
- Consistently assures patient safety in the use of side rails, equipment, nurse call lights, etc.
- Ensures safe environment by keeping patient care areas free of clutter and spills.
· Organizes, cleans, and maintains unit work areas, supplies, and equipment.
- Restocks subutility as needed.
- Assist other staff to restock operating rooms.
- Returns unused supplies, instruments & equipment to their proper storage area.
- Assembles instruments, supplies, equipment and positioning aids needed for cases based on the preference card.
- Transports case carts to and from the Sterile Processing Department (SPD).
- Rotates/removes out-dated stock/supplies.
- Uses Standard Precautions, personal protective equipment, and Isolation precautions.
- Assists in room turnover by cleaning furniture and equipment according to established End of Case Cleaning guidelines.
- Transport specimens to Laboratory.
- Replace/return nitrogen and oxygen tanks.
- Assist in SPD as directed by
a) Cleaning equipment
b) Operating peel pack machine
c) Assembling trays
d) Wrapping trays
· Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills with other health care team members.
- Verbal communication is clear and precise.
- Written communication is legible, if handwritten, and done in a timely manner.
- Answers intercom and pages promptly and courteously.
· Demonstrates flexibility and self-direction in meeting patient and unit needs by responding as a team player.
· Assumes responsibility for personal growth and development.
- Continually maintains and strives to enhance personal technical and clinical competence in all job related duties.
· Participates in mandatory education and unit staff meetings, per established guidelines.
· Complies with established infection control and risk management policies and procedures.
