Type of Position Regular: A position which is considered essential for the effective long-term operation of the university. Persons appointed to this position will receive the privileges and benefits associated with regular employment status.
Duties:
The Department of Environmental Services is seeking a Management Services Assistant Director to oversee the cleaning and care of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. This is a day position.

Position Specific Summary: This position provides overall leadership for the day shift Environmental Services managers and staff at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Coordinates and works with other managers within the department to oversee facility functions and activities including cleaning, environmental quality, event preparation and in-house cleaning services such as waste management and recycling. This position will communicate directly to the director of Environmental Services and may assume the director’s duties in the director’s absence.

Key Areas of Responsibility
Financial Management: Contribute to or develop unit budget. Determine, control, and monitor operating and project costs through knowledge of operating budget and funding structure. Review and ensure that approved financial procedures are followed.

Human Resources Management: Hold managers accountable for high performance and high engagement by articulating expectations, monitoring performance and providing feedback/recognition consistently across areas of responsibility. Recommend and authorize appropriate HR actions. Influence others to accomplish goals by providing purpose, direction and motivation.

Planning/Programming: Perform data and life cycle cost analysis. Responsible for developing and establishing vision, mission and operational principles that are in alignment with institutional core values. Integrate the organization's principles and philosophies into the work culture. Develop, strategize and oversee the effectiveness of operations and maintenance programs. Coordinate work of department with outside entities. Regularly assess the effectiveness of the processes and systems. Analyze and incorporate statistical data components. Direct long range strategic planning for systems and equipment. Assist with communication of unit requirements to UI administration to meet the service needs of the University. Participate in development and communication of the unit and departmental master plan to UI and other key stakeholders.

Operational Management Regulation/Compliance: Recommend and review major and/or capital expenditures. Perform analysis of facility operations and services. Assure adherence to applicable codes and licensing requirements. Serve as subject matter expert in area of expertise. Direct the alignment of resources with operational priorities and strategic goals. Maintain positive and collaborative institutional and external relationships to achieve operational and strategic goals. Provide leadership and direction for the long term stewardship and sustainability of University assets.

Duties include:

Coordinates and/or oversees facility functions and activities including cleaning, environmental quality, set up for special functions, event preparation, contracted and in-house cleaning services such as waste management and cleaning.

Orients and trains new and/or transferring employee(s) to the department cleaning methods and department/hospital policies and procedures.

Evaluates employee performance, coaches, facilitates work unit or team activities and conducts or recommends disciplinary actions, promotions, and terminations.

Schedules, directs and inspects daily work activities of employees.

Assists in planning and revision of departmental policies and procedures to include evaluation and recommendation of supplies and equipment.

Develops and creates new ways to address customer service issues both with staff and departmentally.

Ensures staff compliance with State of Iowa, Iowa Department of Public Health, State Board of Regents, OSHA and regulatory requirements for Hepatitis B (HBV) and Standard Precautions for the education, training and work practices.

Conducts department competency/performance review according to departmental/University guidelines.

Holds employee meetings on a monthly basis to include formal training.

Interview applicants and recommends candidates for appointment.


Performs, recommends and documents counseling and progressive discipline of employees.

Prepares and maintains records and reports.

Ability to work alongside employees with the collective goal of an excellent patient experience

Outstanding customer services attitude.

Ability to work without direct supervision.

Responds to customer complaints and requests from external departments related to the delivery and improvement of a broad scope of services.

Communicates to the Director any issues, complaints or problems noted throughout the house.

Education Required:
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Experience Required:
Considerable (7+ years) management/supervisory experience.
Ability to demonstrate a professional presence reflecting exceptional customer service and cultural sensitivity.
Considerable (5+ years) experience in customer service driven environment.
Minimum (2+ years) management experience working in a health care setting.
Demonstrated experience with time management (i.e setting priorities and managing multiple demands effectively).
Demonstrated commitment to diversity in the educational community.
Valid driver’s license and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety Standards
Must be proficient in computer software applications.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to move up to 50 pounds
Desirable Qualifications:
Prior experience working in a large (500 + bed) academic medical facility.
Knowledge of the full spectrum of facilities management activities; ability to maintain, care for and develop commercial and physical facilities.
Ability to plan, mobilize and distribute resources to fulfill business objective and plans, may require ability to plan and administer a budget.
Ability to form and manage effective teams.
Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Professional(CHESP) credential
Certification of Mastery of Infection Prevention (CMIP)
