Temporary Community starts with you ~ build change, be a Children of Promise youth mentor! UWECI

at Community Corrections Improvement Association in Cedar Rapids, IA

Children of Promise One-on-One Mentoring serves elementary through high school-aged youth in Johnson and Linn Counties. We connect vulnerable children with positive adult role models who help them rise above life's obstacles to achieve their dreams. One-on-one Mentoring provides opportunities for mentees to gain new skills and interests, and expand experiences beyond circles of family, school, and neighborhood. Our mentors change lives, join our team today! Send us an e-mail at or visit our website to get started.
Our mentees have a parent or guardian involved in correctional services such as prison, probation, or parole. Some children may be involved in the juvenile justice system. As part of the Community Corrections Improvement Association, our goal is to break the cycle of family incarceration by working to instill assets in youth that help them overcome life-challenges. The results are amazing. Our Children of Promise consistently show increased confidence, decreased behavior problems, and lower unexcused school absences.

Our volunteer mentors work to instill hope in our young people, building their self-esteem and reminding them that a brighter future is in store. Mentors must be at least 18-years-old, commit to at least one year of mentoring and four hours of time per month. Mentors must also successfully complete basic background checks. Our volunteers do not try to take the role of the parent, but instead act as a trusted friend, guide, and positive influence for mentees.
